The Standard Advice Already Points at the Bedding

That is the right variable. It is also where the standard advice stops — at breathable and moisture-wicking. Two properties, both real, neither of which describes how fast heat actually leaves skin.

The same guidance recommends keeping the bedroom between 60 and 67 °F. Sound advice, and a hard sell in a bed with two people in it, only one of whom needs the room at 60.

Why the Usual Fixes Fall Short

There are four things women in this situation typically try first. Each one addresses something real, and each one leaves the heat trap in place.

“Breathable” bamboo or cotton sheets. These improve airflow through the fabric. Airflow is not the same as conduction — cotton is one of the slowest common fibres at moving heat off skin. The sheet breathes; the comforter above it still insulates.

Moisture-wicking sleepwear. This moves sweat away after it has already formed. It makes the aftermath more bearable. It does nothing to the rate at which heat leaves the skin in the first place.

Cooling gel toppers. A gel layer has a finite amount of heat it can absorb before it reaches body temperature and stops helping. It sits under the sleeper, while the insulating layer is on top.

Turning the air conditioning down. This cools the room for everyone in it, including the partner who does not need cooling — and air is a poor conductor. Cold air a foot above the duvet does very little for skin trapped underneath it.

All four treat the room, the sweat, or the sheet. None of them touch the layer that is doing the insulating — and none of them are measured on the one property that decides how fast heat leaves skin.

The fabric is on both faces. Most cooling comforters put the cooling side up and a warmer backing underneath — which is why the effect disappears the moment someone rolls over. Is one side cooler than the other?
No. The same 170 gsm cooling jersey is used on both faces, and the batch Q-Max retest measures both sides.

Does the cooling wash out?
The effect comes from the fibre itself and the structure of the knit, not from a finish sprayed on the surface. There is no coating to wash away. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, tumble dry low.

Is it too thin to feel like a real comforter?
The 100 gsm fill gives it enough weight to feel held without becoming an insulating layer. It is not a summer sheet, and it is not a winter duvet — it is a full comforter built to conduct heat away rather than hold it in.
